Nevis are located east of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Sea.
The population is largely of African descent and lives in rural areas along the coast. Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy with sugar cane,
cotton and fruits as the major crops. Sugar processing
and tourism are leading industries.
Once a British colony, the islands gained their independence in 1983.
In 1997 the Nevis legislature voted to secede, but their decision
was narrowly rejected by voters in 1998.
